Alan Gilbert joined the Gilbert Alden Barbosa law firm as an of-counsel attorney after a very distinguished career with the Minnesota  Attorney  General’s Office. Al served under five different Attorney Generals and was the State Solicitor General for twenty years.  In 2024, Alan Gilbert retired from the practice of law.

He has extensive litigation experience in State and Federal district and appellate courts, as well as Minnesota administrative proceedings.  During his tenure at the Attorney General’s Office, Al litigated numerous significant cases involving, for example, the 35W bridge collapse, Minnesota’s campaign finance and election laws, the application of various State licensing and other regulatory laws, corporate takeovers, the State’s authority to tax multi-state corporations, and the enforcement of Minnesota’s consumer-protection laws.  Al also advised and represented many public officials and testified at the Minnesota Legislature concerning a number of important laws.  He has prior private practice experience litigating class actions.

Al graduated from William Mitchell College of Law with honors and thereafter served a two-year clerkship with the Minnesota Supreme Court.  He has frequently argued cases at the Minnesota Court of Appeals, the Minnesota Supreme Court and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.  Al also has argued a case at the United States Supreme Court, and the First, Sixth and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal.

Al has considerable experience negotiating successful monetary and other settlements on behalf of clients. In addition to providing legal advice and litigating cases, he is available to serve as a mediator.
