United States v. Windsor was a landmark 2013 case in which the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which described marriage as a union between a male and a female. DOMA was considered unconstitutional because it was in violation of the Fifth Amendment and deprived persons of equal liberty under the law. It also prevented the states from instituting their own laws banning same-sex marriage.
